“One of the hardest things for boys to learn is that a teacher is human. One of the hardest things for a teacher to learn is not to try and tell them.” ― Alan Bennett, The History Boys
Well our tutors are people too, and we are telling you! In the second in our In The Spotlight series, we caught up with Jessica Tobert to see what makes her tick both inside and outside the online classroom.
What gave you the idea to tutor online?
I had tutored one to one for many years, but felt that with a full time job, it was no longer a viable option. The travelling exhausted me and limited the amount of lessons I could do in an evening. Teaching online is the perfect option for me and seems to work for most of my pupils too.
What do you enjoy about tutoring online?
It allows me to use resources on the internet easily, my students are less distracted by their surroundings and it is easier and more comfortable for both parties.
Is there anything about it you don't enjoy?
The feeling of scribbling on the page and being in the child's company when they have moments of struggle or brilliance is something I do miss.
What do you do when you're not tutoring?
I have a full time job as an Office Manager so my life is quite hectic and involves a lot of computers!
What do you like to do to relax?
I practice yoga three times a week and dance one evening a week. I find releasing my physical energy helps my mind to relax and be happier. It also allows me to focus my thoughts and get to sleep at night.
Where do you see yourself in a few years time?
I begin a masters course in Voice Studies in October alongside my tutoring, so hopefully I will be a trained vocal coach and tutor within a year!
Be honest - have you ever tutored in your PJs?
Of course I have! Only PJ bottoms though, I always chuck a shirt on top to look professional! Thanks Jessica! You can take a look at Jessica's profile on our website here.
